Breed Dictionary

Shih Tzu

Size: Small (about 10 inches)

Coat and Color: The Shih Tzu has a double coat similar in texture to a human’s hair and are black, red, beige and white. (light shedder)

Origin: The Shih Tzu originates in Tibet.

Description: An independent dog which is intelligent, dignified and sociable. It gets along well with other household pets and children and although it barks a lot it does not make a good watchdog. Great apartment dogs that are happy with a daily walk.

Yorkshire Terier

Size: Small (8-9 inches)

Coat and Color: Yorkies have a very long, straight and silky coat which is golden brown at the head, chest and legs. (no undercoat, light shedder)

Origin: The Yorkshire Terrier was bred in Yorkshire, Northern England.

Description: Yorkshire Terriers are very intelligent and attached to their families but are also independent.     Not recommended with younger children and large dogs but do well with cats and other household pets.   Although well suited for apartment life they require a daily walk and indoor playtime to suit its energy level.


Size: Varies depending on the poodle breed used. “Teacup” (2-5 lbs) – “Toy” (5-12lbs) – “Miniature” (12- 20 lbs – Most common size)

Coat and Color: The Cockapoo’s coat combines aspects of the Poodle and Cocker Spaniel coats. It could   be curly flat or anywhere in between. Colors include white, cream, tan or a mix of thereof. They are light shedders but their coat requires extensive grooming.

Origin: The Cockapoo is a cross between the American Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle, a cross            originating from the United States.

Description: Known for its pleasant temperament, patience and loyalty. The Cockapoo is gentle and loving   with children, other dogs and pets. They have low exercise demands and are eager to please making them   easy to train.

English Bulldog

Size: Medium (12-14 inches)

Coat and Color: Short, smooth, glossy coat which can be beige, mottled, brindle or white.

Origin: The English Bulldog was bred in England

Description: They enjoy playing with other dogs and pets. They are affectionate, gentle, intelligent and sensitive. Perfect for apartment life, they adapt to the activity level of your family.


Size: “Toy” (7-10lbs) “Standard” (15-25lbs)

Coat and Color: Cavachons have a fluffy and curly coat. Good for owners with allergies (light shedder)

Origin: United States (mix between The Cavalier King, Charles Spaniel and the Bichon)

Description:  This breed is very gentle and loving with a strong desire to please which makes them   perfect for training.

Boston Terrier

Size: Small (15-17 inches)

Coat and Color: Short black coat with white markings or black roan. (light grooming required, light  shedders)

Origin: England/United States

Description: This Terrier is intelligent, enthusiastic and affectionate. They get along well with children  other pets and dogs. Since they love to play they require a moderate amount of exercise but no long walks are necessary.

Labrador Retriever

Size: Large (21-25 inches)

Coat and Color: It has a short, thick, dense coat that can be yellow almost golden or chocolate brown.  (light shedder)

Origin: The Labrador descends from Newfoundland, Canada.

Description: The Labrador Retriever is obedient, loyal and very sociable. They have a mellow personality and get along well with children and all pets. They require a lot of exercise and enjoy long walks, playing  fetch and water games.

French Bulldog

Size: Small (about 12 inches)

Coat and Color: The coat is moderately fine, short and smooth and can be fawn, white or brindle with a variety or markings.

Origin: England, descendant of the English Bulldog.

Description: Known for it loyalty, French Bulldogs are affectionate, gentle and fearless. They are great with children and other pets. Though they require daily exercise this breed makes for an excellent  apartment dog.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Size: Small (12-13 inches)

Coat and Color: Long, soft and silky hair that is lightly waived (average shedder). Tri-color, red and white, black and tan and red.

Origin: The King Charles Spaniel was created by crossing small Spaniels with a short snouted breed such as the Pug. It was brought to Scotland from Continental Europe.

Description: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel loves to be around family and craves attention. It is playful and very   smart. It gets well with children (preferably older), other dogs and any household pets. Well suited for apartment life and adapts to the activity level of your family.


Size: Small (10-15 inches)

Coat and Color: Varies, they either have Pug coats, Beagle coats or both (average shedder).

Origin: The United States, cross breed of a Pug and a Beagle.

Description: The Puggle gets along well with children, other dogs and household pets. Shows signs of jealousy if  ignored by owner. Good for apartment life, enjoys walks and playtime with an intelligent and calm character.

Miniature Schnauzers

Size: Small (13-15 inches)

Coat and Color: Soft, thick undercoat and a rugged, wiry outer coat which is solid black or salt and peppered colored. The coat is longer on the chin and face. (light shedder)

Origin: Germany, the miniature Schnauzer was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1933.

Description: The Miniature Schnauzer is even-tempered and an eager, intelligent learner.

They are protective and alert but too small for a guard dog. Gets along great with familiar children, dogs and other   pets, yet it is wary and cautious with people and dogs it does not know. Well suited for apartment life but has a lot   of energy so it enjoys going for runs and playing games.


Size: Small (14 inches)

Coat and Color: The pug has a glossy short-haired coat which can be apricot, black, fawn or silver. (pugs are average shedders but fawn pugs have double coats and are known for excessive shedding.)

Origin: It was originally bred as an emperor’s pet in China and became a popular pet for Tibetan monks.

Description: Pugs are easygoing, sociable, intelligent and calm. The Pug gets along well with children, other dogs and any household pet. Perfect for apartment life, they like the outdoors but need a place of shade if it is too hot.


Size: Small (8-12 inches)

Coat and Color: Resembling the coat of a Shih-Tzu but with less or no undercoat. (light shedders)

Origin: This Maltese and Shih-Tzu hybrid originated in the United States.

Description: The Mal-Shi is a family focused pet with a very friendly personality. Early socializing with friends, children, travel and animals is recommended. Requires moderate exercise and mental stimulation. They require at least a 20 minute walk a day and should be entertained to avoid the desire to chew.

Golden Retriever

Size: Large (20-24 inches)

Coat/Color: The Golden Retriever has a double coat that comes in various     shades of gold or cream. ( moderate shedder)

Origin: The Golden Retriever was originally bred in England.

Description: Noble, self confident and intelligent. they get along well with their friends and companions. Great with children, dogs and other pets. Although they adapt to your activity level they require daily exercise and obedience lessons.


Size: Small (10-12 inches)

Coat/Color: The pembroke Welsh Corgi has a long, thick outercoat and a short undercoat. (moderate shedder)

Origin: The Corgi originated from Wales.

Description: The Welsh corgi is an energetic dog that is brave, intelligent and self confident. They are good with children as long as they are respected, and can get well with other pets if socialized young. They require daily exercise despite their size.


Size: Large (20-24 inches)

Coat/Color: Known for its distinct short, thick outer coat with a thick underlayer. (little coat maintenance Light shedder)

Origin: The Rottweiler originates in the Roman Empire although the name     derives from the small town of rottweil, Germany.

Description: The Rottweiler is loyal, protective, watchful and strong. they would give their life for their family. If properly socialized a Rottweiler makes a good playmate for children and gets along well with other household pets.  They require daily exercise, wether they be long walks or running beside you bicycle you will be tired before them.


Size: Small ( 11 lbs or under)

Coat/Color: They come in three different coats; Smooth, Wirehaired or Longhaired.

Origin: The Dachshund derived from Germany.

Description: Dachshunds are known for their long and low bodies and for their  hunting abilities. They are playful companions that adapt well to most lifestyles and require regular grooming.


Size: small (8-11 inches)

Coat/Color: The coat is either curly or corded. Poodles are black, blue, silver, gray, cream, red, white or brown. (moderate shedder)

Origin: The Poodle is said to have originated in Germany although it is known as the dog of France.

Description: Poodle is one of the most recognizable breeds. They are known being some of the most trainable breeds. Good with children and other pets, it is recommended to socialize them at an early stage. Daily walks are also recommended for exercise to satisfy their energy levels.
